Wheel Pose (Chakrasana)
Wheel Pose, known in Sanskrit as *Chakrasana* (pronounced chah-KRAH-sah-nah), is a profound and invigorating backbend that symbolizes the wheel – a powerful motif of transformation and continuous movement. This advanced yoga posture requires a delicate balance of strength, flexibility, and courage. By pressing the hands and feet firmly into the earth, the practitioner lifts the navel skyward, creating a beautiful arch that opens the entire front of the body.
`How to Practice Wheel Pose
Before attempting Wheel Pose, ensure your body is adequately warmed up, particularly your spine, shoulders, and wrists. You might consider Cobra Pose or Bridge Pose as preparatory movements.
- Begin by lying comfortably on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor, drawing your heels close to your sit bones. Your feet should be hip-width apart.
- Inhale deeply and bring your arms overhead, bending your elbows. Place your palms flat on the floor beside your head, fingers pointing towards your shoulders. Ensure your elbows are pointing towards the ceiling and not splaying out to the sides.
- On an inhale, press firmly into your hands and feet, lifting your hips off the floor. Gently rest the crown of your head on the mat. Take a moment here to adjust your hands and feet and gather your strength.
- With a strong exhale, press through your hands and feet to lift your head completely off the floor, straightening your arms and arching your back. Lift your navel towards the sky.
- Actively engage your leg muscles, particularly pressing through your heels and inner thighs, to protect your lower back and deepen the arch.
- Maintain a steady breath while holding the pose. To come out, gently tuck your chin towards your chest and slowly unroll your spine back to the mat, vertebra by vertebra.
Benefits of Wheel Pose
Chakrasana is a powerful pose offering numerous physical and energetic benefits:
- Strengthens the entire body: This pose builds significant strength in the arms, wrists, legs, and core.
- Enhances spinal flexibility: It deeply stretches the entire spine, improving its mobility and elasticity. This can be particularly beneficial after practicing forward folds like Seated Forward Bend Pose.
- Opens the chest and shoulders: Wheel Pose expands the chest cavity, promoting deeper breathing and releasing tension in the chest and shoulders.
- Increases energy and vitality: As a deep backbend and chest opener, Chakrasana stimulates the nervous system, boosting energy levels and combating fatigue.
- Stimulates abdominal organs: The deep arch massages the abdominal organs, which can aid digestion.
